  1. There are special drill bits for glass and tile, most are "diamond core" bits.  When you use them, you are supposed to use water for cooling/lubrication


  2. I have used a broken triangular file. I also understand that you can use a standard carbide masonry bit.

    BUT be sure to lubricate it and do not go fast. In fact when I did it I used an egg beater style hand drill and actually drilled it underwater. Not a power drill.

  3. Geoff is right, a diamond hole saw is the only way to go.  I've used them to cut holes in glass block.  They must be kept wet.  You can expect to pay anywhere from $30 - $100 depending on the diameter and quality of the bit.  The cheaper bits might get the job done, but will not cut as many holes.
