I was looking to get into becoming an electrician and i had a few questions. First of all is it better to go to school or to get a union sponsored apprenticeship. And also what type of electrician makes the most money. Also, does an electrician make more money than a carpenter. I'm in the Air Guard so i wouldn't have to pay for school so keep this in mind. I've already got a little bit of electronics principles back ground. I just need a push in the right direction

  1. the one who works hard and gets the job done my dads one. He makes around 35 h. and over time is like $600 for the day

  2. well first and foremost that totally depends on where you work.  an electrician who is an employee will make less than a self employeed electrician.  if you were just starting out as apprentice i would recommend joining a union.  for the sole reason that you will make more money and you will be part of a group of many instead of just one person against the world.  unions are a great way to go if there is available to you.  since your going to have to be an apprentice for a little while def go with the union.  there you will find out what niche is best suited for you.

  3. Electrical engineers make loads, but you need a college degree.

  4. I have been an electrical contractor for 29 years. To be employed as a journeyman electrician, your best bet for the education and financial benefits would be the union (IBEW). You wil have a pretty good retirement package, and usually be able to retire much earlier than most people. Although working for the union, in most cases, is not a very fulfilling or rewarding experience. Most people just end up being "worker drones", being pushed around by a lot of idiots who like pushing around people.

Electrician is a great trade. It pays better than a carpenter, and better than almost any other trade. Electricians and plumbers are usually the highest paid people in the construction industry. Commercial electricians usually get paid more than residential electricians.

Non-union is not a bad choice either. Some people can't get into the union, or don't want to. You won't earn as much. but you usually will stay busy all the time if you're good at your job. It's not easy to stay employed year-round for most union electricians.
