I am currently a junior in high school and I want to be an engineer, but I am not sure which type of engineering would be best for me. I am pretty good at math (honors courses and IB HL Math next year) and I love most sciences. I am most interested in genetics, chemistry, and earth/planetary science. I haven't really had experience with building, but I am sure I can get that when I go to college. Based on my interests, what field of engineering should I major in at college?

  1. There are many types of engineering that fit the sketch provided of your interests. However, that is a question you should best decide for yourself. Chemical engineering is a broad field, biomedical engineering is a bit smaller, and genetic engineering still a bit smaller. All are good choices. Some folks might consider a double major in math and engineering. Others may pursue an MD after undergrad school or even law. There will be some real interesting legal cases associated with the genetic advenacements of late.  Talk to some engineers. Visit the Society web pages for some of the engineering specialties. Many offer Scholarships! Visit colleges that have the fields you are inteested in and talk to both Professors and students. Then you can make an informed choice.  The first two years of engineering school are usually very similar between specialties, so you could start in a general one (like chemical) and then further specialize towards the end of your program. Good Luck!

  2. If you like Math, you should try majoring in it. With a degree in Math, most engineering companies will readily hire you.
