  1. There have been Kings and Queens since ancient times.  Egypt had kings (pharoahs) from at least 3,000 BC.  Most European countries had kings and queens up until the 19th century, with the occasion intermission to have a republic.  Some European countries still have kings and queens, but they are known as 'constitutional' monarchies.  That is, the kigns and queens no longer have any real political power, but instead fulfill a mainly ceremonial role as heads of state.

In England, the earlier eras of history are usually refered to by the name of the royal house that was ruling at the time.  So we had (from the Norman conquest in 1066) the Normans, the Plantagenets, the Tudors, the Stuarts.  The period following the Stuarts is usually known as the 'Georgian' era (the reigns of George I, II, III, IV and William IV).  Then the reign of Queen Victoria is the Victorian era, and then the Edwardian era.  I don't know how future historians will refer to the 20th century.
