What type of flower or plant complements a rose garden?

My roses are pink, red and white and the garden is in full sun for most of the day. I need some plants to complement but not hide or take away from the roses.

It depends on what you like. The site I gave you above has beautiful photos of companion plants next to roses to show you how they will look together. So you can see what grabs you and what doesn't! Rule of thumb to keep in mind when planting your companion plants, consider plants that need only six hours of sun a day and most important... place companion plants far enough away from your roses so they will not rob your roses of nutrients, sunlight or inhibit air circulation!!! Inhibiting air circulation can lead to some ugly diseases where the only thing sitting pretty is your companion plant, the same said for nutrients and sunlight!  I have over 250 roses in my garden, so I have gained some experience over the years.

I will list just a few companion plants for you but there are soooo many more and too many to list here.

I like blues so I will start with them.

Blue Wooduff, Larkspur, delphiniums.

English lavender, goodwin creek lavender,hidcote lavender and munstead lavender.

Love-in-the-mist& bell flower

lobelia (attracts Hummers)

And there is, pink or white babies breath, asiatic lilies,Santa Barbara daisy, feverfew, catmint and catnip, campanulas, coreopsis, dianthus, veronica, pincushion flowers, daylilies, yarrow, ajuga, petunias, scented geraniums, asters, baloon flowers, bells-of-Ireland.

Dwarf mandia and lamiunm with their pretty leaves. For a Silvery shimmering look try, lambs ear, dusty miller, and small artemisias.

If you want a companion plant that helps with insect control (garlic that helps control insects and powdery mildew) marigolds, (nasturiums

helps keep slugs away from  your roses) chives, etc.

Plant tulips between Roses for a nice display in the spring before the roses bloom. You can grow herbs such as Rosemary & Catmint (Nepeta)  among the roses or grow Thyme, Dianthus,  Petunias or Impatients as a ground cover under the roses.

You can chose flowers that are shorter than the rose & likes the same sunny conditions to put in front of roses.  Red roses with a shorter, silvery-white flower in front or a white allysum next to it would be beautiful. Notice the taller flowers behind the roses:

It seems that roses go well with just about anything!

I have all kinds of perennials planted with my roses.  I wish I could show you how my red Robusta Rose looks right now  with the Heleniums behind it or how my Echinacheas & Russian Sage compliment my pink, white & red roses.

Holly hocks are a great flower to accent these.  They come in colors but I have the white and they are beautiful.
