What type of fluid goes in the upper gear case in a 1988 2.3 omc sterndrive why would i get water in the fl

i put gear oil in the upper gear case and i'm getting water in the fluid

OMC oil>What happens when your running on plain the unit is out if the water and isn't cooled with water when you stop the boat it sucks water in the seals that are getting warn & temp change>Change the oil complete and flush> Run again and keep checking> Is the engine running hotter than normal?? As the exhaust is causing the problem with weak seals> That was and issue with the early OMCs Some run the exhaust out the back but very loud>

Gearcase seals are defective.  Have a pressure test done to determine the fault.  This repair is best left to an experienced technician.
