  1. Oh, I learned to cook some amazing dishes while I was in Costa Rica!

The main items of Costa Rican food are usually rice, beans and chickpeas. They also take vegetables, which are from places like Camote, Chayote and Guineo. They are usually combined with a traditional sauce called Lizano and garnished with exotic spices. El Casado is popular with the natives of this nation. This food, which means “married” got its name from the early era when women would pack lunch for their men as they went out for work. Casado consists of the staple rice and beans, with cabbage and tomato, fried plantain, and some kind of meat, often also with egg.

The meals that Costa Ricans are accustomed to nowadays are baked plantain, which is served with white cheese or sugar as a dessert. The best place to buy fresh food is the Saturday morning street market.

  2. my wife is from costa rica, and so we spend lots of time down there hangin out with her family.  usually for breakfast it's coffee, bread with butter and jelly, and gallo pinto.   elementary school kids drink coffee down there too, and might have cereal or something too.  for lunch it's white rice and black beans, with a piece of meat or fish, and some really good juice which they call ''fresco.''  then the afternoon snack consists of a cup of coffee and some cinnamon bread.  for dinner more white rice, black beans and grilled steak.  i've been to costa rica 6 times and spent a total of almost 2 years down there.  hope that helps you out!

  3. The "Natives" - who are generally referred to as Ticos basically eat about the same kind of food we do plus a lot of other tasty and exotic tropical fruit and veggies.

Lots of fresh fruit including tropical fruit such as Bananas, Plaintaines, Pineapples, Mangos, Coconuts, and Oranges along with a lot of Rice, Beans especially Black Beans, Yucca, Peppers, Tomatos, and all kinds of Fish and other Sea Food with lots of Pork and Chicken and some Beef.

They also have a fantastic array of "Ripostes" - Deserts which are out of this world and they have a thick chewy bread that is very tasty, although this particular bread is only one out of many that they have.

They have the same kind of Dairy products like Milk and Cheeses that we do and their Beer - "IMPERIAL & IMPERIAL LIGHT" - is the Best Beer that I have ever tasted!.

Their most common dish is "Black beans and Rice" and they usually eat this for Breakfast along with their Coffee, Orange Juice and mixed fruit - which normally lasts a person until dinner time.

You will not be disappointed with the varity of their food.  It is all good and relatively inexpensive - for example their fantastic rich Coffee costs around $2.75 USD for a POUND of the stuff!

Good luck on your trip and Good Eating!

    BON APERITIF!

  4. The most famous dish of Costa Rica has to be “Gallo Pinto” (literally translated as “spotted rooster”), a dish brought into the country by Nicaraguan immigrants. The dish consists of rice, coriander, onion and black or red beans and is often served for breakfast or lunch. “Casado” is a similar dish consisting of rice and beans, served with pork, steak or chicken and usually accompanied by a small portion of salad and fried plantains. This dish is customarily served as a dinner and is widely available throughout Costa Rica and can provide tourists with a hearty, low-cost meal.
