  1. Upright is easier to find food. Go for a high efficiency 'A' rating as it will pay for itself with rising electricity costs.

  2. An upright freezer is much easier to get things from. They are now as good as chest freezers but they weren't thirty years ago. I would go for a more expensive "A" rated for energy consumption freezer that is frost-free because no one has yet invented a freezer that defrosts easily and cleanly.

  3. Both work well, a chest freezer if you have room will cost slightly less to run if it is one of the new energy efficient ones the reason being that with an upright as soon as you open the door all the cold air hits the floor but with a chest it will stay in, although it is easier to see what you have in an upright. It pays to get a freezer that is just big enough as if you have lots of empty space it makes it very expensive to run because the most expensive thing to keep cold is air, if you are worried about economy go for one of the "A" rated units as they run on very little, try to go for a good make (Bosch,Zanussi or something like)  as they last a lot longer than the cheap units. Do not buy anything made in China as they seem to be exporting rubbish at the moment. They will both keep food fresh, the more star rating  they are the longer they will keep food for. When you are in store ignore the salesman for five minutes and read all the labels on the units as by law now they must carry all of the power consumption, star rating and energy efficiency on them. Good luck.

PS. It pays to do most of your research on the net in the comfort of your own home and write it down as it gets a bit confusing in store with so many units to look at.
