This graceful, clump-growing palm reaches 20 to 30 feet in height with a spread of 8 to 10 feet.

The gently arching, four to six-inch-wide, ringed, bamboo-like, green, multiple trunks are topped with curved, feathery, yellow-green fronds. Known under a variety of names, this beautiful soft palm is quite valued throughout the tropics and is widely planted in frostfree areas. The small, white, inconspicuous flowers are produced all year long on three-foot stalks among the leaves, and the small, oblong, black fruits ripen all year. Yellow Butterfly Palm makes an attractive specimen, screening, or poolside planting but it is overused.

The golden feather (or butterfly) palm is a variety of palm that produces tiny (3 to 5 mm) waxy flowers in a large inflorescence just below the leaves on the trunk.

Abundant numbers of both male and female flowers are produced in the same inflorescence.

Here, the male flower is open, revealing the stamen that is composed of a filament and anther. Pollen produced in the anther will be released when the anther is mature.

The female flower is partially closed with the stigma surface exposed. The fruit of this palm is yellow or purple, about 2 cm in diameter, and the seed is oval and dark red.

The butterfly palm tree originated in Madagascar, is easily propagated, and now grows worldwide in subtropical and tropic environments.
