Question:

What type of fruit is this?

I have some trees in the yard that produce this apple-like fruit but don't know if they are actually apples. They are somewhat narrower but look just like granny smiths just very tiny; about 1.5-2 inches in ht. What are they? They don't bloom like apple trees but begin as red fruit and turn green. Does anybody know what they are? Someone told me they were crab apples but I've never really known.

  1. They are crabbapples....most likely. The size you have described sounds exactly like a crab apple.  There are dozens of varieties of crabapples and the sizes vary. You can actually eat a crabapple, however they are very sour. Some crabapples start out green and turn red and others just the opposite. I have a crabapple in my yard and the apples are only about a half inch in diameter.

It might be best if you include a picture of the tree to be certain.

  2. Defiantly not crabapple,

Maybe your tree is some sort of a Pepper Tree.

    Schinus molle(Peruvian pepper tree)

  3. they are crab apples, they are a very small apple, that can be red and green.  you can eat them, they are just very bitter...we have alot of them in our yard.....

  4. My great-grandmother made wonderful jelly from crabapples.

  5. they don't bloom like apple trees?.... then they're not crabapples!!!.... crabs bloom LIKE apple trees and in fact they pollenate other apple trees!!!....

the fruit starts out RED and then turns GREEN?... that's backwards!!.. again.. not a crabapple... so don't eat any!!!....
