hybrid simply means that it is a combination of two or more substances, materials, or fuel conversion methods.  many hybrid cars are partial gasoline and partial electric, while others are gasoline, hydrogen fuel cell.  they are considered to be more effective and efficient because they reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but really they don't (not significantly) because they are just using it in different ways.

A hybrid car is a regular car that has something extra. The extra things are more batteries and some electric motors. Most of the time the car runs like any other car but in the city it can run on just the batteries with the engine turned off. Hybrid cars do not have enough batteries to go far on just electric power but they can save gas by avoiding stop and go driving by switching to electric at slow speeds.

Most hybrids like the Prius use gasoline as the fuel but some use diesel which is 40% more efficient than gasoline.

im not sure of what its called but its the regular ones we use on normal cars... some use diesel...
