Question:

What type of geranium is the "melinda" and does it spread?

I have not planted the geranium yet, but noticed that some of the leaves are turning brown. Is that because of too much water, because it doesn't like full sun or because it doesn't want to be root bound anymore?

  1. it doesn't spread

  2. Geranium 'Melinda' is described as having some Geranium sylvaticum blood in it but the breeder doesn't give exact heritage.

I find that most of the hardy geraniums like full sun in the cooler climates and part shade elsewhere. I'm in N. CA and I have everything in part shade, except Geranium x riversleaianum types, just to be sure I don't fry them. There are some others that can take more sun but I usually err on the side of caution since I love hardy geraniums so much!

If you have a fairly decent sized container (something around a 1 gallon size and up), it will do fine in there. Just be sure to water more frequently than if it was in the ground. Also be sure to water deeply so that the entire root ball is getting watered.

I think you have narrowed the problem well. It could be lack of water if in a container. It could be too much sun if you are in a hot area. And/or it could be suffering in a small container.

Here is some information on 'Melinda':

Drought & clay tolerant. Deer resistant. Somewhat gopher resistant. Good for borders, rock gardens and containers. Blooms: spring-summer. Color: pale rose pink with dark pink veins. Ht: 18-24". Exposure: sun/part shade. Water: moderate. USDA Z4.

    Hope this helps.
