These are quite large (2,000 pieces) and are all ready glued to a thick piece of cardboard. I would like to frame them and not have to use glass or perspex. Any ideas?Preferably one that won't yellow with age.

  1. you can get something called puzzle glue at walmart.

  2. Modge Podge glue.  It comes in a huge container and you just paint it on.  It dries clear.  I used to do Modge Podge and nothing I ever made had yellowed yet, it's been 12 years since my last creation.

I also don't allow smoking in my home so that might be a factor.

  3. You can use any *permanent*  "white glue" (usually thinned about 3 or 4 to one with water)... Elmers GlueAll is probably the cheapest.

Or you can buy a white glue that's already been prepared (and sold as "decoupage medium") like Mod Podge --or I hear Royal Coat is even better when there's later humidity.  Those will all dry glossy and clear.

You could also use a coat or two of water-washup polyurethane, or a 2-part epoxy resin like Envirotex Lite for an even thicker coat (though resins are more fiddly to use).  Both are clear.

Polyurethane can be purchased in gloss, semi-gloss/satin, and matte versions (which is sometimes *very* matte) so you'd have a choice there. (Or just to tone down the gloss on any most of the others if you want, you can rub with 0000 steel wool then buff a bit.)

Heat and UV light can make some clear mediums turn yellowish over time.  Not sure about white glues, but some polyurethanes have UV protection so you could always use those alone or you could just put a coat or two of one of those particular polyurethanes over your white-glue layers (which would also make them even less scratchable).

Why don't you try doing several of those things to a small inexpensive puzzle, and see which you like the best before committing to the big ones?
