i am 16 years old and currently playing on a handicap of 7. i currently have the callaway X-18 irons, and callaway X460 tour driver. i normally hit my 6 iron 150 metres and my driver between 230 and 250 metres.

i am thinking about changing my clubs... is this i wise idea? i was also looking at getting new wedges, eg vokeys. what other good clubs are there that are good for my handicap and will help me improve?

  2. I agree with wbaker77... practice at your age is more important than new clubs... you have top-quality sticks already and there are few better irons than what you're already hitting.

Having said that, I would investigate either the Vokey or Cleveland RTG wedges. While the wedges in your set are fine in terms of quality, recent studies have found that even casual players (and a seven handicap is more than a casual player) can benefit from changing their wedges about once a year.

Wedges are all about control, feel and spin and the grooves tend to wear down with use. New wedges with crisp grooves can bring back the spin after a great deal of use. A player with your skills can benefit more than a weekend hacker from new wedges.

  3. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the clubs you have now. Improvement will come from practice. Short game, chipping, pitching, and putting will yield the quickest results.

  4. Any kind of Titlieist should help its a good golf company that has well known clubs and gear.

  5. I see improvement as the basis of your question.  In order for anyone to lower their scores and thus their handicap, I would suggest a few lessons and dedication to short game rather than changing equipment.  More strokes are lost from 100 yds in by most golfers than anywhere else on the course.

  6. Mizuno MP-57 Irons are fantastic.

As a 7 handicapper, you already have skills.  You might as well get the best equipment you can afford.  These clubs are ultra forgiving and have a great feel to them.

Driver:.... what can I say... I have a Big Bertha and I am proud to have one.  won't hit another driver... or can't...LOL.

But my guess is your drives are fine and you want to improve on your second shots upping your birdie chances.  Check out the Mizunos... I think you'll seriously like them.
