  1. Australia is a federal commonwealth of six states (and two territories), with a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

    This is the formal definition but it's really not as complicated as it sounds, basically in Australia's case this means:

    *  Commonwealth just means nation or state;

    *  As a federal system Australia is made up of areas that have a right to exist and are guaranteed certain powers separate from the national government.  So Australia can't abolish NSW or Quuensland for example;

    *  Constitutional Monarchy means that the country is headed by a King/Queen but that they do not rule, reigning according to an established constitution that gives power to other institutions (Parliament);

    *  Parliamentary democracy means that Australians choose representatives (and Senators) who pick the government and hold it to account on behalf of the people.

    Hope this helps!!!
