What type of guitar lessons should I get?

The place where I'm learning to play acoustic guitar offers two styles. Rock/pop/jazz and classical. Which should I take? I've never played guitar but I've been playing piano for five years now, if that makes a difference. Also, what's an example of a classical song for the guitar and what's an example of a rock, pop, or jazz song for the guitar?

Rock pop and jazz you will probably learn more chords and things. It would be good if you want to play actual songs that you know. My father plays classical guitar and I find all the songs that he plays very beautiful, but he often tells me how frustrated he gets playing for people when they say "why don't you play a song that we know?". He started teaching me a few months ago, I don't know what style it would be considered. I only know how to play the song Horizons by genesis, blackbird by the beatles, and some classical song called La Grima. I just learned from copying what he did, thats how I learned to play classical piano as well. I realize that not everyone can learn that way though.

If I were you I would go classical because I bet somebody with a foundation in classical will be able to pick up on rock pop and jazz songs easily, but not the othe way around.

if youve been playing the piano, then you know that music stems from 3 main chords, C, D, and G.Almost Every song has one of these chords in it. Sweet home Alabama is a good learner song. it is those 3 chords played in this order G, D C. Also... download a program called guitar pro. It shows how to play tons and tons of songs. Its just almost essential. leave pop music alone. be a serious musician not a people pleaser.(not that you are a people pleaser, I just mean that you should play music for yourself and then people will apreciate your work more becouse you took it seriosly) jazz involves a lot of complicated improv. learn some simple stuff first then advance. One last thing...its better to play a few songs really well than a lot of songs not so well. Agood place to start is with the beatles. they have easy and complicated and cover a wide range.

Try to find a teacher who teaches all types. My guitar teacher who is right into teaches me from classical to country to heavy metal ive only been playing for a year and already i cant do alot of stuf that is more technical and harder.

I think maybe you should try out each genre and choose which is best for you in terms of rock songs I think Nirvana are good for beginners because they are simple and catchy

Choose the one that you most want to learn. That way you'll find it enjoyable. Classical will really help you with finger stretching and technique, while rock/pop/jazz will get into a lot of chords, solos, etc.

Depends on what style you want to get into.
