Question:

What type of helmet is best for me?

I ride horses about once a week. I do recreational riding...not showing or anything that requires a fancy looking helmet. But recently I had a fall to my head, and I need to get a new helmet. I previously had the Troxel Laredo, but I bought it when I was just starting lessons. Now I'm cantering a lot, riding bareback, and a lot of things that make you fall a lot more, even when you're a decent rider.

Like I said, I don't care about looks, but I want a good feel, and I want it to be as safe as possible. Also, the cheaper the better...While I won't buy a less expensive helmet if it's not nearly as safe, I want a good deal for my money.

Any suggestions?

  1. idk

  2. i love my charles owen!

they're more expensive then the troxel (like $200.. i think) but its comfortable, doesn't give you a bubble head, and they're super safe, just as safe as the $600+ helmets

i have the GR8, and its really good.

    good luck!

  3. I really like troxel helmets. They are very safe and not overly expensive.

    I like this one.  http://www.troxelhelmets.com/products/fe...

I'm sure you could get it cheaper in some stores. I got mine chaper at this one tack store in Kansas City.

  4. i have a troxel spirit helmet

i absolutly love the feel of it, and appreciate teh fact that there is a dial fit system on it

its not that expensive, compared to some of the other troxel helmets

good luck with your helmet shopping and riding!

  5. As long as the helmet is ASTM/SEI certified, they're all pretty much on equal ground.  The difference is how it fits you.  Try several on and see what fits best.  Many (including new Troxels) have the dial fit system for a snugger fit at the base of your skull.

I recently replaced both my son's and my Troxel Sport helmets.  They were both fine, but the newer one was 7 years old.  I got him a Troxel Spirit with dial-fit (it fit him best) and me a Tipperary Sportage (even though I had a Troxel before, the new ones didn't fit me quite right).

  6. I strongly suggest the troxel legacy gold! I have it and absolutley love it.. Its about $80 and should cost much more for its perfectness!!!!! If i didn't make this clear already.. I LOVE THIS HELMET!!

  7. I have a GPA helmet, and a IRH helmet. They are very similar. Since you don't want to spend the *big bucks* get an IRH. They are good quality. My IRH was a few years old so I needed to get a new helmet, so I got the GPA for my b-day. Before both of those helmets, I had a Troxel. I competed in it, and did everything in it. The Troxels aren't bad. If they fit you well, then just stick with the Troxels, instead of going to a new helmet company.

    Hope I helped! :)

  8. Try one of the IRH dial-fit helmets. They're similar to Troxel, but the fit is much better. They cost somewhere around $40.

  9. It really doesn't matter. no joke. Go to Fleet Farm, and find a helmet that's ASTM approved(or whatever the approval is, i can't remember). the side thingys should fit under your ears, and the helmet shouldn't wiggle on your head. Even if you decide to show you can just buy a helmet cover and voila, beautiful black helmet.

The biggest thing is to replace a helmet after a fall(well, if you land on your feet or rear, and the helmet never touches the ground, it's fine), even if the helmet looks undamaged. There can be internal damage which compromises the helmet's ability to save your brains! Keep your receipt and box, as most helmet manufacturers will accept broken helmets back and will replace your helmet for less than a new one. Troxel is good brand for all of the above!

  10. try a dublin flexi helmet its an airflow and it never gives me ne hedaches

  11. I;ve had an Onyx helmet for the last 4 years which has lasted wonders and only cost about $50

  12. I like the troxels. I find them worth the money, even though you have to buy a new one every year. Although i usuallly dont because i rarely wear a helmet, even though i should!

i LOVE the sierra riding helmets. I use mine at events that order for helmets and i've had my current one two years.

  13. For showing I like a troxel helmet - but when I am riding young horses or barrels I use a helmet called a Tipperary Sportage helmet.  They look kind of funky - but they're awesome!

First - you'll be one of the most styling people riding!  Second - they fit like a $500 helmet, but cost less than $75!

The day that I bought my helmet there was a $500 one next to the Tipperary and I tried them both on and really couldn't tell the difference - it was amazing.  A much more custom feel than my troxel.

I bought mine from St Croix Saddlery, but they're also at Dover and on ebay.
