What type of herb or plant is a "Thistle"?

Thistles are weeds/plants that have spikes/sharp hair on the leaves and the  flowers are a group of spikes surrounded by leathery scales/leaves tipped with sharp pointed spines.

Milk thistle and blessed thistle are the most common of the thistles.

Milk thistle is good for protecting the liver and kidneys, also good for gallbladder, adrenal disorders, inflammatory bowel disorders, psoriasis, weakened immune system, and all liver disorders.

Blessed thistle is great for increasing mothers milk, lessens inflammation, improves circulation, cleanses the blood, and strengthens the heart.
