FOR A LOCAL OR A TOURIST ? PUT IT THIS WAY , IT TAKES  LITTLE MORE THAN  A SPRING SHOWER TO PUT MOST OF THE ISLAND UNDER WATER . A CAT 2? AAAAAAHHHHH! I MEAN , YOU MIGHT HAVE 5 MAIN ROADS ON THE ENTIRE ISLAND . A CAT 5 ? UNTHINKABLE .   YOUD BETTER KNOW YOUR MAKER WELL BECAUSE YOU AINT LEAVIN AND UNCLE W. ISNT SENDING ANYONE TO GET YOU . THATS FOR SURE. SIMPLY PUT, IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY, YOULL HAVE ALL THE COMFORTS AND CONVIENIENCES YOU WANT. HOWEVER , FOR THE AVERAGE DOMINICAN THAT LIVES WITHOUT ELECTRICITY AND RUNNING WATER 70 PERCENT OF THE TIME , THATS A DIFFERENT STORY. A SAD ONE !

In a word.  Horrendous.  Terrible roads, an electric system that is off as often as it's on; undrinkable water  much is the result of government corruption.

In terms of water, electricity, telecommunications, I would say that the Dominican Republic's infrastructure is "somewhat" comparable to that of the infrastructure of the United States or any other developed part of the world. I use the term "somewhat" because yes, the D.R. has all three, but all three are also more expensive here. For example, a prepaid cell phone call can cost anywhere from 14 - 20 cents per minute whereas in the states, it would cost 10 cents per minute.

The availability of landlines, Internet, and Hot spots are also more and more available with the use of cell phones rising.

Paved roads through out the country is another story. I would estimate that one third to one half of the country's roads are paved, but all major routes are to/from every major city on the island are.

The D.R. also has at least 5 international airports.
