After experiencing dial-up gaming, dsl gaming, and cable internet gaming, I would definitely suggest cable internet for gaming. I have played via PC, and through the consoles that you mention. If you are looking to play MMO type games or even sports games or Halo, cable will be your best bet.

Find out which cable company services your area, some people have a choice, so if you do research costs and stay away from comcast and time warner if you can. (They are starting to charge based on usage and considering the data it takes to play games, you may want to avoid them right now. Although most online games do not go near the limit that comcast has (250GB per month), but quite honestly I would even want to deal with limitations if I can avoid it.)
