  1. A PhD usually is in charge of a lab which may contain a mix of technicians, post-docs and graduate students ( at a university). The level of freedom in your work depends on where you work, greatest at a university, least with a company.

A MS doesn't give you much additional independence compared to a BS, though you may be in charge of several technicians

  2. Getting a MS in Biology doesn't really help much.  May get you slightly more pay, but basically doing the same as a BS level biologist.

As for a PhD, it opens more opportunities.  One can choose academia in order to teach and/or do research.  Almost all college level professors are going to have a PhD.  This can provide you the opportunity to research your own interests and lead your own research group.

You could also choose industry.  Here, there is more variance.  You normally start off as part of a research team working on a particular topic that will help the company progress.  With time, you can again lead a team of researchers in tackling a problem that you help forward the company.

Also, having a PhD in sciences helps in many ways.  It opens a lot of doors in the future.  You will get a lot more respect whether you do lab work, go into sales, or try to start your own company.
