  1. Here's what you do look up the different styles of Karate that are being taught in your area and try out a few classes and see which style that you think is the best style for you to learn, and see which Teacher is right for you.  Part of it is about the Teacher, and the other half is about you.  If you have fun with it, and have a teacher that teaches everything, and also has fun with it that'll make it a lot more enjoyable

  2. You have to realize that jiu jitsu is not a form of Karate. If you want self defense against a bigger opponent then yes, jiu jitsu does use leverage against a bigger opponent to your advantage. If you want to take Karate, then I suggest Kyoukushin Karate. Or just take a self defense class

  3. look for krav maga classes its awesome and theres no stupid belts or anything like that its not a scam like most martial cause it works in real world situations

  4. Never listen to dumb asses that sit around telling you that martiala rts arent about fighting. Sure they help avoid fights, but what the freakin' h**l do they think there training for? a flower picking competition?? ANywho... moving on. Goju or okinawan karate if you can find, are good styles for smaller people, I would NOT recomend shotokan or kyokushin if your physically a huge weakling. Because they aim for speed, strength, etc. Though Kyokushin kicks its fair share of a$$, it is insanely powerful. Karate is good. Learn it. And keep in mind real life situation... just do yourself a favour, and kick a$$ at whatever you do.

  5. Ive trained on the wooden dummy, bob and moreover the martialarm. The martialarm was the most entertaining. Here is a quote from their site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A36HDEmT... Your martial arm movies are fantastic, really good! I watched your slow moves and then when you sped it up I saw how effective the technique was. I thought 'my god' I want to train like that! V. Frome

  6. Since you're small. You should take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That style teaches you to use your smaller size to overcome a larger opponent better than any other style I have ever seen.

  7. First let me say that JuJitsu is not actually karate, although Japanese Jujitsu does contain strikes.

Karate is divided into 3 main branches:

    1) The original Okinawin styles- Most of these are very self defense oriented, and do not contain a lot of flashy moves. Contrary to what some people will tell you on here, Okinawin karate is not just blocks, kicks, and punches. I ftaught right it contains locks, chokes, throws, sweeps, knees, elbows, and clinch fighting. okinawin karate is ideal for small people, as your average Okinawin is fairly small. On average Okinawins are among the smallest people on the planet. Okinawin karate, just like JUjitsu focusses on using your opponents momentum and power against them. Many marines trained in karate when they were stationed in Okinawa, and have stories of getting thrown around like rag dolls by their teachers.

    2) Japanese karate- these styles were developed from the Okinawin styles. While the Japanese styles tend top be more geared to sport, if taught by a good instructor they still contain excellent self defense. Kyokoshin is a Japanese style. Quite honestly I think most people on here recomend it because it was featured on fight quest. It is not a bad style, but from what I have seen it is more a war of attrition, and I see very little moving out of the way of technique or nlocking.

    3) the hybred styles- these are styles(mainly American) that people have made up combining other styles. these run the gammit from p*** poor to excellent.

    Some main okinawin styles are:

    Goju-Ryu

    Shoryn-Ryu

    Euchi-Ryu

    Isshin-Ryu

    Japanes styles include:

    Shotokan

    Kyokoshin

American styles are too numerous to list.

More importent then which style though is to find a good instructor, and a school that trains realisticly, with progressive resistance. there are any good answers on what to look for and what to avoid. Just do a search or e-mail me and I can provide you with one.

Any style can be effective for self defense, it all depends on how it is taught and trained.

  8. Well size doesn't matter much in jujitsu if you are strong enough. I myself have done jujitsu and according to my experience size doesn't matter strength, technique and training matters. I have taken down bigger opponents than me several times.

  9. Take any kind you want. You are not serious. The point of a real martial art is to never use it. If you are thinking about getting attacked, take a self-defense class. They will teach you to use your car keys and kicks to the groin, Nancy.

  10. I think you should look into Aikio.

  11. I'd suggest wado ryu karate which includes some jiu-jitsu :)***
