  1. are you willing to be from homes long peroidoftime

  2. When i started my RR career i started in a different dept then transfer to conductor after 5 years . That maybe the best way to become a conductor  there is no real education needed to apply beside a GED or high school diploma good luck

  3. "If interested in becoming a locomotive engineer; railroads prefer that you be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma, and pass a physical examination.  If your goal is to be an engineer, it's a good idea to start at a lower-level job in the rail industry and work your way up.  The Federal Railroad Administration at the Department of Transportation requires you to be certified before you are permitted to operate a locomotive.  To become certified, you will undergo a training program that lasts a minimum of 6 months and includes both classroom and hands-on instruction in locomotive operation."

  4. There isn't any pre-education or training to be a conductor, that I'm aware of. It's all on the job. I've been a conductor for 11 years. They do insist on a high school education of course. And many railroads test applicants for good mechanical aptitude abilities. Since there's only a couple or three people on a train, and you're usually out in the middle of nowhere, they want people that can figure things out if something should break down. It's also a benefit to many situations that come up, i.e., how to reverse direction of your train - put the engines on the opposite end of a 50 car train using a siding track that only holds 47 cars. Things like that. It's easier to get employment with a large railroad since they hire more often. That's what most people do. That's what I did. Later, I started working for a small railroad with just three trains a day. The hours are better, and it's closer to home. Good luck.
