What type of mailbox post are illegal

Question

I hit a mail box on a dark road that was a round steel post ripped my truck to pieces. The owner said we got tierd of everyone hitting the mail box and driving off, so we fixed that problem cant drive away when you hit steel? I dont think thats right ?

Where I lived in Ca. someone had the same problem with his mailbox. He lived at a three way intersection His box was directly across from a stop sign. The stop sign was there because the street ended and you had to turn. He replaced the post with a concrete block  about 2 1/2'  on a side. Someone actually sued him for the damage to their car. They lost.

I doubt there are any clear cut laws on mailbox construction lol. Either way you hit the mailbox, not the other way around.
