  1. What style are you most interested in? Find out that and see if you can do it.

To narrow it down ask these questions

1 - Do you like Grappling (wrestling) or Striking (kicking and punching) ?

2 - Do you want to do it for sport or self defence ?

3 -  What styles operate in your area ?

When you have answered those questions have a look at this link and it will tell you about the style you might want to do.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Well..it depends on what u want to learn....different styles teach differentthings and specialize on different aspects of the body. if u have a swimming body then u should have strong arms with means taikwando is not really for u. U should try maybe the Shotokan art. they use mainly hands

  3. depends what you want from it either sport or self defence.

    Self defence....jiu-jitsu,Aikido,Boxing,Wing chun,Krav maga.

    Sport...Karate,judo,Bjj,wrestling

Just my opinion ,best wishes :)***

  4. Well what do you want out of it? Bodytype *CAN* be something that can be taken into account when considering an initial martial art, but you can take whatever you like. The bodytype you have can only act as an advantage or disadvantage depending on what you pick, how good the school is, and how much you train per week/trained overall.

Everyone should honestly train every fighting range, so it doesn't particularly matter where you decide you want to start. If you think like striking: Cool. Take a striking art. If you like grappling: Cool. Take a grappling art. Eventually you're going to have to have those two cross, or you can start with a hybrid style that covers multiple ranges.

Good luck with whatever you do.

  5. It all depends on what you are looking to get out of your art.  If you want history and focus, the "intrinsic" values of martial arts, then do with a technical storied martial art, like Tae Kwon Do or the okinawan arts, like shotokan,or Goju Ryu, etc.  If instead you are looking for effective and immediate license to be a feared/ respected combantant, jiu jitsu is perfect for someone your size.  About 160lbs and 5-8 is a good size for any style, and if you have the "swimmers body" any art will compliment speed and grace, two things that swimmers generally have.  The important thing to do is find a truly great instructor close enough to get to.  The art is truly secondary to the instruction.  a terrible sensei/ master/ instructor makes the art a waste of time, and vice versa.  Narrow down your interests, also.  I got into martial Arts in the late 80's and had the opportunity to study Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Aikido.  All of them have fantastic merits, but for vastly different reasons.  I was not comfortable being "tied up" with people, so while I excelled at Judo, i wasn't as compelled to succeed as with Tae kwon Do.  At the time I liked striking, and back then I had a great instructor and school in TKD.  Today, at an older age, my tastes are much different and I find more beauty and enjoyment in the technical aspect of Judo and Aikido.  I hope this helps, so find out if you are a "striker" or grappler first, then find a school with a good reputation adn great instructors, and the rest will work itself out.

  6. I think the most important thing is that whatever you choose, you stay with it; any real art requires years of consistent practice, so it's important you enjoy it

Some people like sparring, some like katas and forms, some like more esoteric practices

It also depends on what's available; a good teacher is one who teaches because he or she wants to share their art, not because they want your money

Try out different schools, teachers, styles; there's no law that says you have to make a lifetime commitment to the mastery of an art in order to take one class

Most martial artists I know have tried many different styles, before settling on their favorite
