  1. Just to add to David V's answer:

Earth Bending is primarily based on Hung Ga (Hung Gar), with the most notable exception being the method used by Toph, whose system is based on Southern Praying Mantis, or Chu Ga (Chu Gar) which is considerably different from Northern methods of Mantis boxing. The model for Toph is Sifu Manuel Rodriguez and he lovingly refers to this method as "zombie style" due to the rigid-looking (although deceitfully quite fluid!) movements.

The Fire Bending explanation above from Hammy is quite accurate, and I have had the joy of working out with Sifu Kisu, the martial arts consultant for the Avatar: The Last Air Bender series. Not surprisingly, Sifu Kisu teaches Northern Shaolin from his school based in Hollywood, CA: The Harmonious Fist Chinese Athletic Association.

  2. Fire is shaolin, water is tai chi, wind is ba gua, earth is something i forgot hehe

  3. Firebending moves are based mainly on the style of Northern Shaolin kung fu, but with a few techniques from Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis. The fictional art of Firebending overall draws heir from three ancient martial arts, each with their own separate moves and varying results.

Xingyiquan -  blends strikes from the classic "Seven Stars": hands, feet, elbows, hips, knees, shoulders, and crown.

Southern Dragon Claw - mirrors a dragon swooping down on it prey. The form contains close-range techniques for seizing and holding.

Northern Shaolin - which can be any number of fighting styles related to (but not encompassing) Long Fist boxing.

  4. You mean from Avatar: The Last Airbender?

    If so, its Northern Shaolin.
