  1. In the USA, a third class medical certificate serves as a student pilot's license, and you'll need one before you can fly an aircraft solo during your training.  The same third class medical continues to be valid for a private pilot.

    the 1st class medical last for 6 months, but this is for ATP.

    a 2nd class medical lasts for 1 year, this is for commercial flying and flight instruction.

    the one you need for a private is the 3rd class, and that lasts for 3 years if you are less than 40, and 2 years if you are more than 40.

  4. You need a Class 3 medical, good for 1 year or you can get a Class 2 and it's good for 2 years (or at least it was a few years back)
