What type of monologue is best for 'period' plays?

I have an audition in the near future. The audition is for 5 different shows, but we only can do 1 monologue. One show is a period "18th century) farce and one is a greek tragedy. Two are Chekov and one is contemporary.

Is it best to do a Classical or Contemporary monologue?

Is it best to stay dramatic or comedic?

  1. They don't tell you what they want? I've never heard of that, usually you are told what sort of monologue to bring. But if not, then it probably means they're pretty low-key. Is this community theatre or something? In that case, you're lucky, because you get to choose whatever shows you off best. Choose a piece you're really comfortable with. Or if there is a particular role in one of the plays that you see yourself in or that best suits you, go with a monologue that is similar to that character so they'll see you in the role.

  2. It looks like all the shows are going to be dramatic. Except for the contemporary.

So I suggest a classical piece. Whatever you think will highlight your skills. If you are interested in a particular role, get a monologue that is similar to it.
