  1. They will receive a birth cert. naming them as the child's parents exactly the same as if they had given birth to the child.

  2. we adopted a little guy from our local county in april 2007.  It was weird because it was like his birthmother didn't exist.  The birth certificate that you get is rewritten to have the adoptive parent(s) name(s) on it with their identifying information on it.  Basically, they substitute the adoptive parents' names for the birthparents' names and date it the same (not just the birthdate but also the registering date of when the certificate was submitted to the clerk, etc).  They "seal" the other birth records.  If you would like to make your own record of your adopted child's birth family, if you have it, you can make a family tree with as much info as you know, etc.  I did this in our son's scrapbook with the name of his birthmother, her picture, and the names of his siblings that had closed adoptions so we didn't get to meet them.

I'd be glad to help you with other questions.  Our guy and soon to be another adopted guy rock my world!

  3. The "official birth record" will be an AMENDED birth certificate showing the name of the adopting parents as if the child were born to these parents.

Often information is missing from an amended birth certificate. For example, the time of my birth is not shown. My certificate doesn't say whether or not I was a single or twin birth, born alive or not (well...alive, of course).  Sometimes the name of the hospital is missing, etc.

If you change the name of the child, his or her NEW name will appear, of course.  My parents allowed me to keep my first & middle name. Something I have always been grateful to them for!  Of course, I got their last name.

I like JK's ideas.  If at all possible, gather and keep as much information as you can before applying for & receiving an amended birth certificate. Get a copy of your child's original birth certificate before it's sealed if you can. Your child will greatly appreciate it one day!

  4. A fake one that looks like the adoptive parents gave the child life.

My 'birth certificate'  is a legalized lie.

  5. The birth record will be exactly like the original, but the birth parent's names will be replaced by the adoptive parents' names.
