  1. The oil should be a 2 cycle oil with a TCW 3  rating.  Do not use chain saw oil or any other 2 cycle oil that does not have the TCW 3 rating on the label.

  2. I take it you mean for an outboard 2 cycle?

Most manufacturers will recommend an oil and will also tell you the minimum requirements of the oil.  Use a good quality 2 cycle oil and you should be fine.

  3. The simplest and safest is to match the brand of oil to the engine. Many manufacturers have proprietary blends. Check marinas or bait stores in your area.

Also, buy a generic outboard oil which can be found at many convenience stores and/or outdoor superstores. It will say right on it "intended for use in outboard engines."

Josh nailed it: the TCW3 rating.
