For example, I think all supermarkets should have recycling drop-off points in their parking lots for the packaging in the products they sell (cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum, etc.). I'm not saying that the supermarkets should have to pay for this, but it would be a good way to encourage more recycling in areas with no house-to-house pickup. Also, any place that sells batteries or mercury-containing lightbulbs should be required to accept the used ones back for recycling. And I love when supermarkets charge a small fee for their bags. It encourages people to reuse them or use canvas bags!

  1. Practical individual recycling.  You may use: My Best Recycling Idea

Besides recycling the plastic containers, you can improve your work or home environments by bringing live potted plants indoors.

    Major items needed:

One empty plastic gallon container.   Tree Top Apple Juice is preferred, or equal in shape.

One empty plastic ½ gallon container.  Langers All Pomergranate Juice is preferred or equal.

Directions:  Lay the plastic gallon container on its side so the front label is facing up.  Place the empty plastic half gallon container on the label and with a sharpie pen outline the bottom on the Tree Top label and with a sharp knife carefully cut the outline.  Insert the half gallon into the hole until it rest on the back label of the gallon container.  Then mark and cut approximately one inch above the cut on the ½ gallon  to complete your planter container.  Remove and drill several ¼ inch holes on the bottom of the ½ gallon cut container for drainage.

Fill the cut ½ gallon planter with one inch of gravel before putting in good potting mix soil and live growing plant.  If you make two or more you can pour the water back and forth and not waste the water with the nutrients.

Go to NASA’s Clean Air Plant Study for the top ten plants that cleans the indoor air better than the rest.   http://www.zone10.com/tech/NASA/Fyh.htm

  2. It all starts within ourselves... I think if we are clean to ourselves, we can also be clean to our environment..

  3. enforced recycling..  During world war 2 the people  Recycled everything....Nothing was  wasted....We are to lazy these days...We think  we are  rich..it   IS a  illusion created by the investors  !!!.we can do better producing green electricity, Green  electrical products, the ones we  use are turning most of electrical usage into heat..Stop wasting  water  we use to much...We  must  grow our food  closer  to where we live...Not only to  cut the cost of transporting but to insure the  supply...European  countries are having riots strikes  now  over the cost of fuel, shortages cost

  4. Most people have some pretty good ideas but I for one don't think we should push businesses into fronting more cost.  The expense always trickles down to the consumer and I think we are paying way to much as it is. It is getting a little ridiculous don't you think? In my opinion we are in a financial mess today in this country partly because of the environmentalist who keep finding things wrong with our lives. Enough already....

  5. None I believe that people should live the way they want. Even if they are not living green.

  6. put a recycling drop off at you house

  7. Have you ever really taken stock of all the packaging that manufacturers use? Even if we do all we can to recycle, etc., there is waaaaay too much to have to recycle.  I don't know the answers, but I would encourage the manufacturers to try to find some answers at their level. Outer boxes, inner packaging, etc....could it be reduced? I have even decided to not buy certain products because of the "waste" that it creates. Guess I'll go back to being an old fashioned cook to help green up the earth!

  8. You're right. If the biggest industries begin to use less "greenhouse" gases while created more biological bag, car and furniture; you can be sure that everybody will live a health life(for our environment).

If today people decide to buy cars that use less gasoline I think it means a lot but in fact it isn't enough because of the factories which pollute so much our planet.

To put it in a nutshell, the unity of every world's citizen(the farmers, commercial and the Government too) will stop our environment deprivation.

Just stop pollute and think about the Planet's future!

    Who is ready to react?

  9. This might sound funny, but I'd like to see community composting. Some communities recycle their green waste.  Ours doesn't.  I'd like to see programs to encourage people to trade in their gas mowers for electric, and instead of bagging up the grass, mulching it back into the lawn and soil. Incentives for homeowners to remove the grass entirely and landscape with species native to the area that will thrive without supplemental water.

There are a lot of community based solutions, and education is going to be a key component.  Shop smart. Shop locally.  Be aware.  Be informed. Some of this will be organized, but I'm hoping there's also a groundswell of awareness at the individual level, that will eventually drive more and better change across the board.
