Question:

What type of paint for crutches?

I'm having foot surgery next week, and I'll be on crutches for at least 8 weeks after that. I have some crutches, but I want to paint them. That said - what sort of paint would be best? I was thinking acrylic paint, but I'm afraid that would chip really badly.

Anyone have an idea on what can be used to paint aluminum? I want to be able to do designs, as a note - so no spray paints.

  2. Use some sticky shelf paper..or your might consider using pvc tape.  It comes in several colors.  It would be easy to clean or change colors if desired.

  3. Aluminum needs to be cleaned with 1) an alkaline cleaner, followed 2) with a fresh water rinse 3)use an iron phosphate solution containing fluoride wash, then 4) fresh water rinse (Recie Dl...optimal) % again...fresh water rinse(VirginDl optimal ) Air dry thoroughly.  Choice of cleaning depends on alloy and soils to be removed. The fluoride is the key. It etches the aluminum surface to provide for good paint adhesion. Reduce the stages and you reduce the chance for success.

Prime with a thinned down oil based metal priming paint. Primer creates a barrier between the oxidized aluminum and the finished paint.

Finished coat should consist of a 100% aacrylic latex exterior house paint.Use a high volume of acrylic paint for a longer lasting paint job. I hope this helps for your project.

  4. You can paint them, just choose a can of oil primer like Kilz.  Then use oil paint over that.  Latex would work choose an exterior paint instead of interior.  It will last longer.
