And how do I make sure they're clean/sanitary and safe? I know tattoo places often do body piercings as well, but I'm a little bit wary of going in one. Some of them look kinda creepy. (I'm 17 and would have a parent w/ me)

  1. unfortunetly a lot of tattoo parlours have that 'creepy' look but you just need to just push foward and get in that shop and you'll see that it's not so bad and people are very friendly, if your worried about the sanitary conditions, look at their website, they should have pictures of thier shop and piercings they have already done.

  2. most beauty shops do piercings. yer u need a parent and most beauty places look clean and they are, when they are getting or the stuff for the piercing make sure u see them steralize it, other wise tell them to

  3. you can find an actually body piercer. Their always really good and clean. You can find them everywhere.

Like hair palor's, shopping malls and in tattoo palor's

  4. The only place you should be going is to an experienced professional, not some hack "piercer" at a mall kiosk, boutique store or hair/nail salon. These places are NOT sanitary in the least and the majority, if not all, do not use sterile equipment. (Not to mention they use piercing guns, or some horrific variation.)

As an example: How many times have you been to a mall where someone was getting pierced literally feet away from you? Not very clean or private at all. I've never seen these people wear gloves, disinfect their surfaces, sterilize their tools or wash their hands either.

If you're wary of entering tattoo/piercing shops in your area consider traveling. Always go with your gut instinct, these places should never make you feel uncomfortable.

As far as how to tell if they're clean and safe? If you're truly concerned about your health/safety I suggest reading the APP 'Choosing A Piercer' and 'A Piercee's Bill of Rights' pages below.

Don't be afraid to do your own little personal inspection/interrogation, any reputable professional will be more than happy to give you a tour and answer your questions. They may even be impressed/pleased to see that you did your homework.

Good luck and always ask questions! :D

*Your piercer should automatically discuss their after-care method with you and provide you with a take home sheet. If they do not, or something seems questionable (ex. vaseline, rubbing alcohol, neosporin, etc.) refer to the link above.
