The refrigerator cord was from the back of the refrigerator and there isn't enough wire to combine any extra cord.

  1. They are a fairly standard flat three wire, braided wire cord.

Where the cord reaches the back of the refrigerator there is a clamp like device that secures the cord to the back of the refrigerator. This secures the cord to back of the cabinet to prevent the cord from pulling on the connections.

You can cut the wires and wire nut them together as long as you are PAST that clamp called a strained relief. And doing that means the connection is usually done behind the rear panel.  That also means your replacement cord needs to be the full length you need.

    Good Luck.

  2. Use 12-3 wire and wire it in as close to the beginning of the cord as possible.  If you can get to the connections in the back of the refrigerator, don't splice, connect it directly to the terminal block.  You can buy cords with the male connector already on it or buy the length you need plus a male plug to attach to it.  Don't make it longer than you need, try to keep it to 6 ft or less.
