I bought the pioneer 7.1 chnnel VSX917V with HDMI (which I have since returned) and hooked it up only using HDMI. To get sound I needed to change the setting on PS3 to optical and use the optical connection? Why?. I want FULL HD Sound. Do I need a HD Receiver? Please help.

  1. yes you need a HT recievcer/amp with hdmi, you do not need optical, hdmi carries hd quality audio.  Onkyo are great recievers/amps for a good price which have all the features you want ,and have great auto calibration .

i use onkyo in my home theater with a ps3 for blu ray, you cant go wrong.  now you just need some kick *** speakers and sub :-)

    ( svs sb01surrounds and svs sb12 plus sub )

  2. Here's the main thingl... HDMI carries all the information you need for great video and audio. Receivers for home theater have been moving to support HDMI for some years now, but today, this can very much be confusing.

Sounds good, but it's been a process. Early HDMI receivers did NOT receive audio over HDMI. What they did was simply switch HDMI... just like a big old HDMI switch box. Now sure, they could switch in optical or analog or whatever sound went with each input at the same time, but they didn't support audio.

Newer amps move a step closer... they receive HDMI audio (look for HDMI 1.3/1.3a support in your amp), play it, decode it if necessary, and pass through to your TV.

Now, here's the next problem... some amps can't take full 7.1 channel PCM audio over HDMI. If they decode from HDMI, you can tell the PS3 to send a bitstream to HDMI, and you'll be good, as long as your AMP supports that format. So it'll probably do AC3 just fine, but it might not work with TrueHD... some of these bitstreams can't be sent by the PS3.

So what you also need to check is whether or not your receiver/amp can support full 8-channel PCM.. that will ensure that all Blu-Ray formats (which are, as of release 2.3, all possible to decode on the PS3) play on your new AMP.

My Sony STR-DG720 is a good match to the PS3. See here:

Note that the earlier unit, the STR-DG710, did NOT support the 8-hannel PCM over HDMI, and so it was kind of problem with the PS3.

  3. you need a receiver that has hdmi inputs and hdmi switching... with this you are getting sound and picture in 1080p....

for example this sony product would do- SON HTSS2000
