Question:

What type of recorder should be used for the solo in "All Good Gifts" (from Godspell)?

This song is to be sung as part of a church wedding ceremony. I am to play the short recorder solo. Should it be an alto recorder or a soprano recorder? Should I invest in a wooden recorder for a better sound or will the plastic one suffice? Or would a different instrument be better although it is written for a recorder? (I can possibly substitute it with the tin flute or the violin.) Any input from people familiar with playing the recorder and/or the show Godspell would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

  1. I recommend you to use the wooden recorder, just because it has got much softer sound than the plastic ones. I don't recommend tin whistles at all, their sund is just too metallic and sharp for a church! The same goes for soprano recorder as well, for me the sound of the alto recorder is much more ear-pleasant than the soprano.
