I currently own slides, cover slips, and the microscope comes with color filters. I am going to purchase sterile petri dishes with media already in them.

What microorganisms would I be able to look at and what would be some good starting questions to look into?

Minor question, where would I be able to find water bears? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Bears

  1. A 1600x microscope is very unusual, it would need a 100x nosepiece and 16 x eyepiece. This is the absolute limit of what you can resolve with a light microscope, and would often use UV light to optimize the resolution.

Given that you can use it al the magnification you cite, you should be able to see any size organism, down to bacterial size. The resolution should be in the order of 0.2 microns
