What type of rock/stone to put in Beta tank?

Is it OK to put river rock in Beta tank..? They are very smooth and non porous. Also, I have clear glass type stones (also smooth) used in floral arrangements and hurricane candles holders on bottom to hold flowers/candles in place, can these be used in place of gravel? Any, suggestions also welcomed in addition to answering questions.

  1. Sure.  Whatever you think looks pretty.  They are mostly just there to provide some extra surface area for the beneficial bacteria to colonize, help hide any fish waste from sight so the tank doesn't look gross and so that there is something on the bottom besides a smooth expanse of glass which tends to freak fish out.

  2. Yup!! I saw this fish bowl with twisted glass pieces coming up from the bottom..

  3. I have seen all of those things used with betas. Most people put live plants in there too.

  4. Yeah.. remember to soak in REAL HOT Water before use.. to clear all impurities..

Also, u can have driftwood! Good for the fishes.. U can type java moss onto the wood... very healthy for the fishy

  5. The glass stones.. The flat marble things? I use those in my fish tank instead of gravel and they work wonderfully. Those would definitely be fine in a tank! Just be sure to rinse them very well before adding them.

River rock should be alright, again, rinse it first. My brother has river rock in his tank and it never bothered the fish. So long as you don't use saltwater items [sea shells] in freshwater tanks, you should be good. =]
