Question:

What type of saw to use?

I have been using a jigsaw to cut doors out of wood for birdhouses. I usually drill a hole in the middle, and cut the square out. However, I want my production to go faster, and in the middle of the night (when I'm usually up) the saw is too loud to use. So, I was wondering what type of saw I should use to cut out these squares. Would a mini hacksaw or wallboard saw work? Thanks!

  1. Well you're actually using the best saw for the job already. If you are concerned about the noise levels then a hand coping saw would be you're next best choice. But obviously its going to be slower doing it by hand then using a power tool.

  2. Use a hole saw and a battery powered drill. Battery powered drills are fairly quiet. All your holes will be perfectly round instead of square though. To see a hole saw try this link:http://www.milwaukeeconnect.com/webapp/w...

I posted a link to the brand I use , but there are cheaper ones out there.

  3. Wallboard saw is so coarse, it'll be hard to cut with. A mini hacksaw may work but with either of the tools it'll take longer do to the manual labor part.

I'm not certain how thick of wood you are cutting but a scroll saw or band saw may be less noisy than the jigsaw. Other issue is if you are making just a hole and popping the blade in the middle, it may not work. Typically these two saws you'd have to come into the middle from an outer edge. Thus leaving behind your saw marks........which could be closed up with wood putty.

  4. i know your saying square door-check with hardware store they have bits same as for cutting door k***s holes-be lot faster with drill

if you want to stay with doors the jig still best option unless you invest in a band saw

  5. The teeth on the drywall saw are too coarse, and the mini hacksaws teeth are too fine.

I can tell you to try drilling more than 1 pc. of wood at a time.Maybe you  could  have all  your parts cut out, and save the night time work for glueing  the houses together.

  6. Birds don't need a square door.  Just drill a hole with a 1" or 1 1/2" Forstner bit,
