If you go Sightseeing wear comfortable Shoes or Sneakers.For October i would say you need to bring a sweater.Jeans are fine to wear on cool nights .Bring shoes and clothes that are comfortable, for you to wear.I've been to Italy long ago.I went to all the places you mentioned here.I'm sure you will enjoy Italy.They have a lot of nice Shops and outside Cafes.

Invest in nice comfortable shoes; ankle boots would be perfect but w/very low heels or rubber soles (I suggest checking at Neiman Marcus) You have to spend a little more (o.k. a lot more)for fashion and comfort. Do not wear running shoes as you will be labeled "ugly american" The Italians always dress nice. They even wear high heels a lot walking on those uneven cobblestone streets. I have always lived by this rule and people ask me for directions whenever I'm in Europe which is a complement because they think I'm one of them-(blend in)

If you're sightseeing, then wear flat, comfortable shoes.  Ideally, tennis shoes or sneakers.  October can be cool and wet, so take some waterproof and warm outerwear.

It really doesn't matter what you wear, as long as it's comfortable, because you're going to look like a tourist anyway.  It's hard not too, when wandering around looking at the sights with a guidebook or map in hand!

if you're a tourist, then don't look like one. wear nice boots, but with comfortable heel, a nice wooly sweater with underneath a top for when it gets too hot (Venice can get hot). wear jeans or a long leather skirt when it's colder. a romantic knee length skirt when it gets warmer.

in Italy in October is quite cold...but not very! so you can wear...jeans and a sweater
