Question:

What type of snake did I find???

I found a slinder snake in my shed coiled up in my tool box. It probably was not over 2 ft and not under 18 inches. The best I can remember it had a black head and tail and had a large diamond type pattern on its back. Not the type of diamonds on a rattle snake either. My neighbor thinks it was a copperhead but I don't think so. It did not have that viper looking head. I live in north Alabama out in the country. Any idea what type of snake this may have been??

  1. Diamondback....poisionus

  2. It might be a chicken snake. I found one recently and it had markings like that. Um.. but don't let it bite you just to see whether or not it's poisonous! But I don't think I have to tell you that. :)

  3. I would guess a kind of rattlesnake or a diamond back watersnake

  4. can you get a picture of it?  the only way to tell for sure is to have a picture of it and with that you can look them up by searching wild snakes, alabama, ect.  if you can get a picture message me at mychelerox@yahoo.com and I will try to find out.

  5. i would guess gardensnake but if it was you would obviously not be asking

  6. Here's a list of all of the snakes found in Alabama and you can click on them for pictures.

My first guess is a young black rat snake. They don't show a juvenile on the website, but they are patterned and later become solid black as adults. There are a few water snakes which could also be possibilities, as well as the eastern coachwhip which are patterned as juveniles. It's not a copperhead as your friend suggested since they have copper colored heads, not black ones.
