What type of software can let users access certain folders over the web? ?

Im going to set up a special computer in my house and I was wondering if there was a web based type of software that would let certain people access certain folders & data?

You can run apache and password protect the directories. If it's the primary function though, I would just run linux on it and install apache.

Are you trying to set up a server, or are you trying to control a computer remotely?

TightVNC can allow you to remotely control a computer, and it is free.

If you want to create a home server, there are plenty of Linux distros set up just for that.

If you're trying to put files online, you could try Google Documents.

Set up a free FTP server. Something like http://filezilla-project.org/

There are certainly programs that do this, not sure any are free. But do some googling and you will find something.
