Question:

What type of spurs should I get?

I've never owned, or used a pair of spurs in my life and figure they could help me extend my reach when riding my horse. My friends all have spurs and use them, so I would like to get some. I don't know anything about spurs except the basics, and I just need something cheap and easy to come by.

Any spurs you can buy at Atwoods, or Yokums would be nice, also please list the brand and maybe a picture if you have one. And could someone decribe to me what spur straps are and if I need them?

  1. I don't care if you're using them as a fashion statement or in a competition, they shouldn't be used period.

  2. No offense. But if your friends jumped off a cliff would you want to jump off too?

You don't need spurs unless you know how to use them. Ask your instructor what they think about it. And they will more than likely give you the same anwser.

People who don't know how to use spurs can cause injuries to their horses. I've seen so many horses who can't stand their ribs being touched because of bruises, swelling, and even a cracked rib because their rider had no idea of what they were doing with a pair of spurs.

You have to learn how to use them from a professional horse person before you can use them .

  3. You don't get spurs just to have them. They're not to extend your reach when you ride either. If you have spurs then it means that your horse doesn't behave and you need to teach it some manners.

My pony is a pig and bucks and rears if shes had enough of work so i got spurs to reinforce my leg aids. NOT BECAUSE MY FRIENDS HAVE THEM. Spurs aren't nice. How would you like it is some one dug spurs into your sides???????

It really is surprising how many people who get spurs actually end up RUINING THEIR HORSE because they  have abused them!!

ask your instructor if you need spurs because most people dont.

    DONT RUIN YOUR HORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I also don't think you should get them just because all your friends do.  Especially if your horse does not need them.  And also if you don't know how to use them.  They should not be fashion accessory like stated before.  I've seen horses with 'abraded' sides from supposedly 'gentle' spurs.  I've seen horses with swelling from blunt tip spurs because the rider keeps hitting them in the same spot.

If you use spurs on horse that has never had them...you'd better be prepared for a fit from the horse.  I've seen them leap and jump sideways or go into a rip roaring bucking fit.

I STRONGLY urge you not to use them if it's not necessary.

If you're going to anyways...you should get a set of ball spurs.

You need to be a responsible rider and inspect your horse when you are done riding.  If you see welts, swelling, or scrapes from your use of spurs...DO THE RIGHT THING...and take the spurs OFF!  That means you DO NOT have the ability to ride with them correctly.

They are NOT for extending your reach.  They are an aid to reinforce LEG PRESSURE.  Not a crutch for laziness in training.

You admit you don't know anything about them so...spur straps hold the spur onto your boot.  They connect to the spur and then go over the top of your boot.

Again...IF YOU DON'T NEED THEM...DON'T USE THEM!!  You can cause your horse to become dead sided too.  You can cause your horse NOT to respond to leg pressure because he and you rely on the spurs.

  5. all your friends have spurs so you want some. you have never used a pair of them ever. let me just say this.

SPURS ARE NOT A FASHION STATEMENT.THEY ARE A SPECIALISED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT USED ONLY WHEN NEEDED.it is stupid to want spurs cos ur friends have them. i suggest learning to use ur legs properly first.
