Harvard, yale, or Princeton are my top three colleges. I want to pursue a career in Law, mainly Business Law. I'm wondering if any students of these colleges or any studenst of top ranked law schools, could give me any advice other then get a 4.0 and participate in lots of clubs.

  1. Score extremely high on the SAT, near perfect...

  2. unless you go to a prestigious high school you don't have much chance.

in my high school only a 92 average is needed to get into princeton and a 95 for harvard and yale. --> if you early decision

  3. Have a great essay, get great recommendations from teachers that think your god's gift in talent, and you must get a SAT score on at least 2000.  Your goal should be the 2100-2200 range.

  4. Don't fall in love with only these three schools. They reject the majority of 4.0's, of 2400 SAT scorers and of high school validictorians. Each accepts under 8% of applicants and probably accepts only 3-4% of applicants unconnected to the schools through being recruited athletes (17% of every class), legacies (about 12%), minorities (20%) and the rich and famous. In other words, no matter how qualified you are chances of getting in will be very slim.

That said, those accepted will go way past what's available at their schools. They will have leadership positions in national organization, win national recognition in something, play in big city symphonies, have shown their art in major gallaries.....the will simply stand out from their peer 4.0/2400 competition in a big way.

The other top colleges in the Country are a bit more sane. At those top grades in your school's hardest classes, a 2300 SAT and being president of a few clubs will give you a chance. All of the top schools just keep getting more applications from all over the world. Those that toop 20% three years ago took 13% this year. The days of a 2100 having a chance or the kid with several B's are gone.

And finally, top schools do not want kids who belong to lots of clubs. They do not look for well rounded kids, they want well lopsided ones--kids who've taken one activity all the way to the top. They build classses where everyone is extremely accomplished at something.
