  1. Modern house wiring cable is made with a copper conductor insulated with PVC.  Over the decades, we've tried other things.  In the 1970s, aluminium conductors were tried but the terminals tended to corrode.  In the 1950s, we tried rubber insulation - but that generally went brittle and fell off in the 1960s.  Before PVC became widespread, cable was insulated with cotton and pitch.  That might sound archaic, but there's a lot of cotton pitch insulated cable still in use after 80 years and showing no signs of failing.

  2. For house hold lighting it would be 1.5mm single copper core with PVC sleeve, live brown, neutral -blue

either single core or twin and earth

  3. The electrical wire is made from copper and the insulation is made from plastic.
