I am 5'7 145 pounds and I just got back from knee surgery and am looking for something to do. I have surfed before but it was on a foam board and i took lessons. Now I am looking for a board to buy. I want one that looks cool and is for beginner/intermediate riders. Any Suggestions? or any companies I should check out?

  1. Rent or buy a used board off Craigslist.org.  There is no point in paying full price for a board when you really don't know what suits you right now.

2 boards are usually recommended for the typical beginner.

    1) Longboard - easy to paddle, easy to ride, not as easy to turn.  This is the single easiest board to learn on.

    2) Funboard - usually in the 7-8' range this the preferred 'middle of the road' board preferred by many beginners who eventually want to shift to a shortboard.  This board SCREAMS kook.

If you want to eventually move to a shortboard, start with a funboard.  If you just want to surf, get a longboard.

DON'T BUY NEW.  I'd even recommend renting the first few times since it's a cheap and easy way to try a few different boards without buying them.
