most importantly the caddy knows the course- knows yardage, knows approaches, knows pin placement and knows the green.  This information is the most valuable to a player in that it could save a couple of strokes per round in competitive play if the player is unfamiliar with the course.

keeping clubs clean, tending the flag, etc are secondary.

well, if i was your caddie and you were having a bad day, i'd perform a task on you that would leave you in a wonderful daze for the rest of the week.

It depends on the player.  The player employs the caddy and each player will want different skills from his/her caddy.  Basically a good caddy will identify what a player wants from his/her caddy. The most basic checklist is keeping the clubs clean, giving a good accurate yardage, cleaning the ball at the putting green, etc. At an exclusive private club, the old saying is show up, keep up, shut up.  I have played in tournaments with caddies and what I usually want is someone who knows when to speak and when to shut up.  He knows when to say something encouraging and when to just let me vent.  He knows my game and knows when to diagree with me and when to let me go my own way with a club selection or strategic decision.  Anyway, you get the point.  You could write a full book on the subject.
