I own a 98 Subaru Impreza L wagon AWD. What are the best fit tires for this vehicle? I live in Calgary so i need tires that can handle in the snow and handle decent on the dry pavement. All seasons most likely. Could anyone refer me to some brands or websites?

  1. The Kuhmo Ecsta ASX is not awesome.  Trust me, I sell the d**n things.  They are cheap.  People who buy them tend not to be too picky.  For a cheap tire they aren't bad, but certainly not all that and a box of Cracker Jacks.

In the P195/60R15 87H (or European equivilant 195/60R15 88H) size that your Imprezza takes and given where you live there are a few really good choices if you only want to own one set of tires.

The Bridgestone Potenza RE960 S Pole Position is the one you want if dry weather handling response and grip is a priority.  Very good when new in the snow - at the top of the UHP All-Season heap in that regard.

Goodyear Assurance Tripletread.  More of a touring than a performance tire.  Has a long treadwear warranty, good reputation for winter traction when new, good in the rain and decent dry weather handling.  Best product from Goodyear in decades.

Nokian WR G2.  If winter performance is most important to you this is your tire.  At 1/2 worn this tire will still be better in the winter than the other two when new.  The WR G2 is the only all-season tire in the North American market rated for severe winter use.  "All-season" for any other tire means "light snow" and moderate temperatures.  Not sub-zero, deep snow and ice.  The Nokian can handle all of that and still be used in the summer.  The downside is that this tire is not going to handle as well as the others on warm dry pavement.

  3. The last all season tires I used for year round driving was a Kumho ASX and they were awesome.  They had a pretty stiff side wall for great dry handling and they were pretty quiet too.  Handled the snow no problem.  Best of al they were priced really well too.  Now a couple of my friends use them for winter tires and they are very happy with them.

Mark F.  Yeah moron.  I don't care how long you've been selling tires.  That's the point.  They are awesome for the price.  In fact many on the Subaru forums even use them for Street/Autocross so that say's plenty about them.  The tires you mention are no better for double the price.  Quit being a sales man and let people give their opinion.  O know what the F stands for.
