  1. a handy-dandy screwdriver will do that easily enough (been there, done that..haha!)   One of those pick-axe tools (with a small hoe on one end and a pointy thing on the other) will work also. Just soak the ground beforehand to make it easier.  Can't think of anything powered for that small of a trench though.

  2. Do not use a chainsaw. It will leave a perfect size hole very quickly and dull your blade. It is also dangerous, so even though it works great, don't do it!

  3. use a manual or gas or electric edger it will cut a slit just the right size

  4. A mattock or a light duty pick.

  5. You can actually rent a machine for installing wire. Check with your local tool rental place.

  6. get a flat shovel. stick it in the ground on the line of your wire, and wiggle the handle forward and back. it should make a perfect triangular trench.

  7. Try using a "grub" axe. It is simular to a pick axe but has a wider blade, approximatel 3 inches. Yu can remove the small area you need in no time. I cut a 40' long by 3" trench for some conduit. It went real fast as i did the trenching after a nice rain storm.

  8. you can rent a "ground saw"  it is like the machines you see used on road construction to cut concrete, but it cuts a trench in dirt.  you can adjust the depth and it is like using a bid lawnmower.

  9. You could try the "Ditch Witch." It cuts a path wider than half an inch tho.
