  1. I think if you can't be bothered to do proper research yourself you shouldn't get a tortoise at all. All require a great degree of specialist care and quite obviously you don't want to provide it. And considering summer is nearly over were you planning on keeping the poor thing in a box all winter?

If you are serious about keeping a tort do your own proper research look on these sites.

    http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/forum/

    http://www.tortoisetrust.org/backidx.htm...

But you will find that they can't stay outside all the time and will require a heated building or indoor enclosure. Not all species of tortoise can be hibernated such as leopards, sulcatas and redfoots and require heating and lighting all year round. Mediterranean species can be hibernated as well as russian tortoises.

But make sure you do proper research! For the sake of whatever tortoise you choose.

  2. Tortoises need special care, and need to be taken seriously. I suggest you research and look at the websites suggested above. Please don't buy one without fully understanding the care of tortoises.

  3. Don't get a tortoise, nearly all tortoises are on the endangered list of "Cities"

Tortoises are not a pet that you can make of,there are more tortoises die in captivity than in the wild.

More so when Winter comes and in experienced hands, So please think again.

  4. No tortoise should live in just a small wooden box.

They need space. If you are going to keep one indoors you will need an indoor enclosure of around 3m by 1m in diameter - minimum! The sides will need to be about a foot high so it can't escape. You will need a UV light (really important) and a basking lamp (or combination of both). Within the box you will need to have a den which would consist of a smaller box that the tortoise can sleep in. Keep this part at the opposite end to the basking area - this is so that the tortoise can regulate it's own temperature. Vary the terrain - some sandy areas, some stony areas etc etc for interest. Remember to feed wild foods (dandelion leaves, clover etc) rather than fruit and shop bought vegetables. You will also need to provide a calcium supplement for healthy shell growth.

They are a big commitment as they live for 70+ years if well looked after!!

A Hermann tortoise is a good beginners tortoise.

Please also do not keep a tortoise in a tank. It is important that they can't see out of the sides as if they do they will literally spend all day trying to get through the glass!! This is stressful for the animal and unfair.

Do plenty of research! Good Luck.

  5. i have a pet tortoise which i made sure was a legally bred in the Uk tortoise (if you are in the US find one there) i say get a hermann's tortoise as they are the best for beginners. Only get one if you have a decent vet that knows what they are doing and that you have researched it well they need heat and a lot of specific care. Find a vet and they will tell you what to do and where the right breeders are to get one. But if you get one get a hermann's!

  6. sorry honey but no tortoise can liver in a wooden box, they need space lighting and heating and proper care to stay healthy, if you can't provide a good living area you should not get one as the wrong husbandry can kill a tortoise, but if you need to research then here is a good site to start to learn how to look after a tortoise  http://www.tortoisetrust.org/, i really think you need to research these reptiles before you just get one the best type to get for a beginner is a horsefield (russian) as they are a hardy tortoise that stays small and ar ethe easiest to care for  here is a site to see if they are suitable for you http://russiantortoise.org/

  7. one does not get a tortoise for the summer.  it is a life time deal or no deal at all.

  8. dont get one

    research salmonella

thousands and thousands of people in america have died from it this year and it comes alot from touching reptiles

if you are going to get one always wash your hands

  9. I've been raising tortoises for years and I've found Sulcata tortoises are the best and. Keeping a tortoise in a box is animal abuse, and they will not servive. Do Not keep them in a box. Get a tank 10 gallon and a heat lamp. But don't ever keep the animal in a box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
